[Magatama]
Magatama are a type of jewel that developed uniquely in Japan and are considered one of the three sacred treasures. Magatama made from processed bones and shells have been excavated as far back as the Jomon period, and amazonite magatama have been discovered from the Unmon Jomon period, between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. The Kojiki and Nihon Shoki describe magatama being presented as tributes to Amaterasu, a goddess of Japanese mythology.
There are various theories about the shape of magatama, such as that it is based on a fetus, the moon, or an animal's tusk, but nothing is known for certain.
However, based on previous excavated examples and documents, it appears that they also had a uniquely Japanese religious significance, of borrowing the power of nature and spirits to protect oneself.
The magatama culture is said to have disappeared with the introduction of Buddhism, but even today, magatama are sold as talismans at shrines that worship Shinto gods.
